Christmas time is the most magical time of the year. Every holiday season everything seems a bit more merry & bright, except for your pocketbook. Between gifts, decorations, and special occasions, it’s very easy to go over budget. This is why I find it imperative to cut corners when you can to help save a little extra cash.
A great place to start saving is with your decorations. Instead of spending hundreds on your Christmas decor, you can make a few simple high-impact swaps instead. Ready to hear what they are? Let’s do it!
Christmas Towels
Every home has a lot of towels. Most homes have hand towels in the bathroom, dish towels in the kitchen, and many more. They are a great way to decorate a space, especially during the holidays. Start your holiday decorating by swapping out at least a few of your regular towels with Christmas ones.
Most of the time you can find holiday-themed towels in packs to use in multiple places. This makes them an extremely affordable hack and an easy way to continue the holiday cheer throughout your entire home.
Holiday Table Napkins
Speaking of linens, do you keep a table setting display that includes cloth napkins? If you answered yes, you just gave yourself another simple Christmas swap to help turn your home into a winter wonderland. Trade out your basic napkins for something with a touch more Christmas cheer.
If you want to go a little bit further you can elevate your tablescape by:
- doing a fun seasonal napkin fold
- swapping out your napkin rings for Christmas ones
- adding a sprig of pine or other holiday greens
- putting holiday nametags on top of your napkins
Swap Your Vase Greens
I think many of you who read my blogs already know how much I love vases. For those of you who haven’t read my previous blogs, I’m convinced there is no limit to the number of vases someone should own. Not only are they absolutely stunning decorations, but they also make for an easy way to transition your decorations between the seasons.
During the season of good cheer, simply swap out your fall stems (or everyday ones) for something more wintery. We like to keep ours very generic so they can stay out long after December 25th. Some of my favorite winter greens include:
- Pine
- Cedar
- Eucalyptus
- Juniper
- Cypress
- Spruce
- Magnolia leaves
- Redwood
More Greenery Options
Greenery is probably my favorite thing about home decor which is why modern farmhouse design holds a special place in my heart. The style is known for its great use of greenery in its design and that’s especially true during the holidays.
If you’re ever in need of an affordable, simple, and effective touch of Christmas, add some holiday greens to an existing display. You can spruce it up with some holly berries, pinecones, or other festive accessories. Regardless of how you choose to style it, the greens can truly elevate any display already in your home.
Cozy Pillow Covers
Quality pillow covers are a true investment in your home. Instead of purchasing a plethora of pillows and trying to stash them all away for each of their seasons, save space and money by investing in quality inserts and pillow covers. I promise this will be a life-altering revelation for your home decor brain.
Although I absolutely love Christmas pillows, you certainly don’t need holiday-specific ones. If you want them and have the budget for them, you can certainly purchase them. However, if you would like something more subtle that can be used even after the holiday, try incorporating some warmer fabrics like boucle or velvet instead. I love the latter option because not only does it stretch my budget further, it’s also one less thing I have to put away after Christmas.
A Holiday Accent
Holiday or seasonal pillows are a great addition. If your pillows are a little plain (or not Christmas-themed at all), and you want to spruce things up a bit – I’ve got the perfect solution for you! Find a Christmas-shaped pillow to add to your pillow display. Whether it’s a cute Christmas tree or a happy snowman, a single accent in the space can make a big impact.
Christmas Scented Candles
One of the best parts of the holiday are the delicious smells from all of the Christmas goodies being whipped up in the kitchen. Our home always smells like cinnamon, peppermint, or cookies. Each season, those fond smells are part of what makes the holidays so special for me. Scent is also one of the most overlooked aspects of interior decor, which is why I love talking about Christmas candles.
Not only are most seasonal candles super affordable, our friends often gift them to us during the holidays. This makes them either extremely affordable or free. They also add a special aroma to help bring to life your holiday decor. Extra bonus points if your candle looks like Christmas as well!
