Do you dread stepping foot in your laundry room on laundry day? Or do you get frustrated fumbling about while loading the washer in your dull and cluttered space? I totally get it. Having a bland and dysfunctional space can make your dreaded chores even more dreadful to complete.

On the flip side, if you create a fun and functional space it can make completing your chores a little less boring. That’s one of the most amazing parts of designing a house. A good design will help you with your everyday tasks by not only beautifying your home but by creating spaces that work for you.

Laundry Room Updates

Depending on your laundry room and the amount of space you have, some of these upgrades may not be possible. However, I’ve tried to compile 6 tips that almost anyone can incorporate into their laundry room to make a huge difference. Laundry is boring, but your laundry room doesn’t have to be. Let’s discuss how to spice it up.

Tip #1: Update Your Lighting

Most laundry rooms come with one, dim boob light for the entire space. If you know me, you know I can’t stand those hideous half-moon ceiling lights. To add value to your home and seriously upgrade your space, consider updating the lighting fixture in your laundry room.

Are you really looking to brighten the room and increase the lighting? Try layering in several light sources. This will help create a luxurious and welcoming space to make sorting your laundry a breeze. Below are just a few suggestions on potential light fixtures to include:

  • Pendant light over the sink
  • Upgraded flush mount fixtures
  • Countertop lamp
  • Under-cabinet LED lighting
  • Recessed Lighting

Depending on how large your laundry room is, you may need to add several lighting options to help brighten up the space. If you select darker paint colors or flooring, I highly recommend adding in at least 3 types of lighting so the room doesn’t appear dark.

Tip #2: Spice Up Your Tile

Whether it’s a bold backsplash or funky tile flooring, your laundry room presents the perfect opportunity to play with a fun print. Bold patterns, like the tile above, can often feel overwhelming on a larger scale. Since laundry rooms tend to be a bit smaller, the busy pattern often gives just the right touch of quirkiness to your design.

If you don’t love a bold tile floor, you could also opt for a unique shape like a hexagon or brick! Prefer to keep your flooring neutral or consistent with the rest of the home? That’s perfectly understandable. Instead, add your unique print as a backsplash on the wall of your laundry room.

Tip #3: Make Room To Hang

Laundry rooms never seem to be quite big enough. Even the largest of laundry rooms never seem to fill all of your clothes-washing needs. That’s why it’s important to make the most out of every inch of the space. We can do this by incorporating function into your design.

One very important function I often don’t see addressed in laundry room design is hanging space. Not all clothes are made to be dried and oftentimes you have to try and stash one of those fold-out drying racks in between the washer and dryer. Instead, add your hanging room as a feature in your design.

By adding a hanging bar to the design, your clothes will appear like an accent decoration to your well-crafted room. Don’t settle for a wire rack either. Upgrade to a solid wood shelf and a thicker pole to ensure the space looks more luxurious.

Tip #4: Get Rid Of The Store Containers

What you store your laundry room needs in matters. Those bright orange, plastic Tide jars, and blue and pink dryer sheet boxes aren’t the most aesthetically appealing items. If you’re looking for a simple and affordable way to elevate your laundry room, update the containers for your laundry necessities.

Instead of keeping your tide pods in their original plastic tub, pour them into a lovely clear jar. Remove your dryer sheets from their original box and place them in a small wicker tray. There are tons of affordable containers and options that will help create a more luxurious space for washing clothes. Plus, I think it also makes things easier to access!

Tip #5: Add Stylish Storage Options

Try as you may, not everything will fit neatly in pretty little jars on your counter. This is why you need some additional, stylish storage options. My go-to storage option in the wash room is wicker baskets. Thicker wicker baskets add an organic element to help soften the space, while also hiding any unsightly items from view.

If you have a ton of cabinets and don’t need to add baskets, I recommend giving them a fresh coat of paint. Adding a pop of color here can help modernize the space while creating a more luxurious feel.

Tip #6: Decorate!

A well-decorated space can help boost your mood. This also applies to your laundry room. Even though it’s a purely functional space, don’t let that trick your brain into thinking the room doesn’t deserve a special touch. The more you spruce this space up, the less you’ll mind spending time in here!

Besides your decorative storage jars, add in a few decorative accents to help beautify the room. You can add artwork to the walls, small knick knacks onto the counter, and bring in a couple of plants! These touches combined with your aesthetic storage containers will help cultivate a well-designed laundry room that you’ll never want to leave!
