When to upgrade modern farmhouse bedding

Ready to upgrade your modern farmhouse bedding? A bedroom is a place of rest, relaxation, and recovery. It’s a place you should feel cozy and at peace. Design can play a big part in evoking a certain emotion or feeling, which is why it is particularly important to focus your bedroom design around creating a romantic oasis just for you (and maybe your significant other).

Let’s start by focusing on the main feature of the bedroom: the bed. A bed can make or break a room, especially when it comes to design. As you’ve probably heard before, each room should have a focal point. For bedrooms that focal point will be the bed and maybe the wall behind it.

So how do you make your lackluster bedding set the modern farmhouse bed of your dreams? Well, I’m glad you asked. Let me show you how to create the bedding design you’ve always dreamed of.

The cherry on top

The first step in selecting cohesive and cozy farmhouse bedding is to find a quilt, comforter, or duvet cover that you love. Frankly, this can be the most challenging part. Find one that catches your eye, but also sparks that feeling of inner peace and relaxation. I know that sounds a bit odd, but finding a comforter or duvet with muted colors versus bright, bold patterns will make a major difference in creating a relaxed vibe.

You’ll know exactly what I mean when you see find it.

I do recommend finding at least one fluffier item. Whether it’s a puffy comforter or a duvet at the foot of your bed, find a piece that adds some fluff to your bed. If your sheets, blanket, quilt, and throw are all flat, your bed will fall…well…flat.

Your duvet or comforter is often the perfect place to add that extra poof. This should also be the bedding item you spend the most money on. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Color, color, color

Once you find a comforter or quilt you love, then you can decide on a color palette. Although this bold cheetah print set may come off as a bit much for most, it works because it fits within a designated color scheme. They’ve repeated the colors green, black, and tan throughout the set and decorations to make the entire design cohesive. You can truly do this with any colors or patterns as long as you repeat them.

There are certainly a few exceptions to this rule, but that’s for another day!

The bedding to the left of the cheetah may resonate with more of you, but the same concept applies. The beautifully patterned quilt at the base of the bed was what I like to call the chosen piece. This is the “tie-in” piece that defines the bedding color palette. As you can see the rusted rose velvet comforter, grey and white throws, and the other decorative items all pull out different accents from the quilt.

The muted pops of color in the comforter are brought to life with the added accents and the additional layering makes you want to jump into and never get up!

Texturize

Once you’ve established your color scheme, dive into mixing and matching different patterns. This combination may be too overwhelming for some, but I must I think they make for the most glorious farmhouse bedding set. For those looking for something less busy, try only adding in a couple of different patterns at a time or more subtle patterns. I could do an entire blog post on how to mix patterns like a pro (let me know in the comments below if you’d like one), but for now we will keep the pattern talk simple.

If you’re new to pattern mixing start with a couple of smaller print patterns. Polka dots, stripes, and florals often mix well but can get overwhelming if all three are large prints. For example, if the comforter pictured here had 4-inch polka dots the large print would clash with the bold striped duvet thrown over it.

Blue, grey and white bedding with velvet, fur, and other textures

You also want to play around with different textures. A bed with pillows, quilt, and blanket all made of the same material will be quite the snooze fest. Instead add in different textures, especially softer textiles for a warm, comfy vibe. This doesn’t necessarily mean every piece on your bed should be a different material though.

If you find bedding that’s in the same fabric, at least ensure they have a different texture. If you have one smooth velvet, opt for the other piece to have more dips or crinkles. For a simple and trendy texture add, throw in a waffle knit blanket or quilt and a fuzzy throw blanket. This will elevate any bed and make your abode look a lot cozier.

Black and white tribal patterned bedding with light wood tray & decorations.

This last tip is a bit more on the bougie side, but hey, we’re all about elevating, right? I love adding a throw to the bottom corner of my beds, but I love adding a tray on top of that even more. Somehow it manages to make the space feel even more like a romantic retreat than just your ordinary night’s sleep. Mix in your favorite artwork or a family photo, some candles, and of course greenery to customize your tray!

There are hundreds of combinations here, so find what works for you.

This is also a great opportunity to mix in different shapes. If all your pillows are square, try a rounded tray. As far as sizing goes, it greatly depends on the size of your bed. Also, bigger is better here if you’re in doubt of what size to get.

A larger tray will give the room a more grandiose look while a small tray can get lost on a large bed. Bottom line, find a tray and decorations that match your style and color palette.

Your bedroom should be the most personal space in your home, which is why you must bring your personal style into the space.
