Need help decorating your bedroom dresser? I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, decorating a bedroom can be hard. Your bedroom is the most personal space in your home, which can often make it more challenging as you’re attempting to find a style that best represents you while still being both functional and relaxing. It’s a delicate balance that can be difficult to manage.
Your Bedroom Dresser
Oftentimes, everyone focuses on the bed and the dresser seems to become a forgotten resting place for random clutter. Unfortunately, that same cluttered furniture piece is now an eyesore and sore point in your space. To create the relaxing retreat you deserve, I’ve got 6 secret tips to help you create a beautiful, functional dresser display for your bedroom!
Find Your Color Palette
Color doesn’t have to mean pinks, blues, or reds. I find the best color palettes normally consist of neutrals with a pop of one specific color. Your bedroom decor should be a combination of two to three relaxing colors and you should continue that same palette with your dresser decor. If you are starting fresh with a new color palette, I have a few tips for you.
First, select two to three key colors and find varying shades of these colors to repeat throughout the space. Next, Use color to evoke relaxation. Blues and greens are shown to create a sense of calm, which are perfect to mix in with neutrals. Opt for more muted hues of blues and greens such as olive green or navy blue.
Create A Focal Point
After selecting your color palette, the first thing you need to do is create an anchor for your decor. The anchor will become the focal point of the decorations which will then simply aid in framing the piece. The anchor you choose should be no less than half the width of your dresser and absolutely no wider than it. The height will depend on your wall, but most importantly, ensure that it’s rested at eye level regardless of height.
Mirrors, art, and windows make for the best anchors. I recommend using your focal point to play with shapes and colors. If your dresser has sharp edges, opt for a round mirror instead. For brown dressers, add a pop of color with a beautiful work of art instead of a matching framed mirror like above.
Add Some Height
Since your focal point draws the eye up, you’ll need to bring in height with your decorations. Keep in mind that you don’t want your decor to compete with your anchor. Your tall accent should be at least a few inches shorter than your anchor and off to one side or the other. This will help create balance.
Not sure what to include for height? Check out these suggestions:
- Lamp
- Tall plant potted plant
- Flowers in a vase
- Sculpture or figurine
- Candlesticks
- Jewelry box
Think Functional
Your dresser is one of the first places you walk by in the morning and one of the last before you fall asleep at night. Think long and hard about your morning and nighttime routine when decorating. What do you often reach for each time or wish you had close by?
Me, I like to get dressed in front of my mirror, touch up my make-up, and roll on a bit of perfume before heading out for the day. That’s why I added a small container with my favorite roller stick scents on top of my dresser. Everyone’s functional items will vary, but here are a few of my favorite functional dresser items:
- Jewelry tray or box
- Water Carafe
- Tray filled with perfume & other necessities
- Lamp
Create A Storage Option
Storage doesn’t have to mean basket, but it can. As I mentioned earlier, dressers tend to collect a lot of random clutter. If you want to keep it clean and organized find a way to incorporate storage into your dresser decor design.
Baskets, books with secret compartments, trays, and bowls all make excellent storage solutions for your dresser top. A beautiful tray with an artfully organized array of perfumes, serums, and nail polishes genuinely is the best of both worlds. Think of what tends to collect on your dresser and find a storage solution that works.
Make It Meaningful
A bedroom is your private space, so make it personal. Decorate your dresser with pieces that have meaning for you. This could be a portrait of a beloved family member or your grandma’s antique jewelry box. Adding that special touch will help make the space feel like home and will always put a smile on your face when you see it.
Now that you have all the secret keys to successfully decorating your bedroom dresser, layer them together. Stack decorations on top of one another and try out various arrangements to create a balanced look around your focal point.
