The 2022 flooring trends are just as wild as all the other news. The Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial, the Will Smith incident, and so much more has shocked and awed us all. I have to say this year’s flooring trends are following suit.
Last year brought us medium to dark brown or grey hardwood, concrete, terracotta tiles, and laid patterns with tiles. I loved the uniqueness of some of the more “bold” options, but I definitely have grown tired of the dark wood or grey flooring. This year’s trends have almost completely flipped for modern farmhouse design and I love it!
2022 Flooring Trends: What’s In?
We’re almost halfway through this year and I’ve seen some really bold flooring choices developing along with some really gorgeous ones. I’ve collected a list of what’s trending this year for flooring and it’s quite, well, interesting. You may love some of them, or you may hate some of them. Either way, let’s get to it!
Light Wood Flooring
I’ve said it time and time again, but 2022 is all about warming up your farmhouse! Whether it’s the walls, cabinets, or floors, it’s time to add some warmer neutrals and accents back into the home. In the past, wood flooring has been dark or cool-toned which created a stark contrast to the light walls, but also made the home feel very sterile.
This year, whether you choose laminate or engineered hardwood, lighter and warm-toned wood flooring is in! The new coloring brings a breath of fresh air into the space and not only warms up the home, but it also helps to make the space feel lighter and brighter. I’m definitely a huge fan of the switch and I think it will stay in style for quite some time.
Patterned Flooring
Patterned floors are very much in! Whether in your laundry room, bathroom, closet, or shower, prints have made a surprising comeback this year. I saw patterned floors in every which way, and no, I’m not just talking patterned tiles. Some of the prints were very bold, but some were a bit more quaint. Let me share some of the trending patterns and prints I’ve seen this year.
Starting with the classic tile, patterns are back with a vengeance. Many master bathrooms kept their tile choices slightly more neutral, but half baths, kids baths, and guest baths almost all had bold tile choices. There were so many beautiful and fun patterns to choose from, it was almost hard to select a favorite. All I know is I immediately went home and started researching some for my house!
This one I almost missed. As I walked through several homes I noticed something a little different about the wood flooring. It had prints! The understated addition to the regular flooring made such a brilliant impact and showed me a way to do patterned flooring like never before.
I don’t think this trend will last long, but it’s certainly cute for now! If you have the time and money you can always add a print now and refinish your floors later.
This one left me absolutely baffled! We all love carpet, but what about carpet with a bold print? This trend may not be for everyone, but it’s definitely big for 2022.
I’m by no means saying you should go out and buy a cheetah or leopard print carpet for your home, but adding a bit more variation to your carpet could be a possibility for you. However, don’t blow your budget on this print. I don’t think it will be around for too long.
Hexagon Tile
Hexagon tile has become a modern farmhouse dream flooring! I absolutely adored all the ways this tile was used in the homes I’ve viewed. From large-scale black tiles to smaller white ones, this tile made the perfect addition to any bathroom or laundry room. I love how perfectly it fits into the room and adds a casual bit of character.
I don’t know if this trend is here to stay, but I definitely think it’s worth working into your design. If I’m right, the shape is just simple enough to become a modern farmhouse staple for years to come.
Penny Tile
Penny tile has always been a popular choice for backsplashes or showers. It hasn’t really been widely used as flooring for probably several reasons. One of which is that penny tile is notoriously hard to clean because of how much grout there is. Although gorgeous, it may be a bit of a hassle to keep clean.
If you’re up for the challenge, penny tile has made a resurgence into modern farmhouse flooring trends! The tiny tile somehow seems to enlarge the space and create a fun visual moment in a hallway or guest bath. I think the challenges of penny tile will leave this moment in the spotlight short-lived, but if you love it give it a go!
Black Tile
Last but not least, black tile recently made quite a spectacle in homes this year. This trending tile choice brings another level of elegance to a bathroom. It’s the perfect addition to a spacious master with tons of light, but we’ve also seen it popping up in laundry rooms and smaller bathrooms as well.
Black flooring can also create a challenge to keep clean, but the beauty to me far outweighs the maintenance. Despite the changes in 2022 flooring trends, I do believe this trend has been brewing for a while now and it is definitely here to stay!
